A Pleasure to Meet Joris from the Austrian Parliament

It was a real pleasure recently to meet Joris from the Austrian Parliament, alongside my wonderful ward colleague, Cllr Sue Bell. Opportunities like this are a reminder of how valuable it is to share experiences, ideas, and perspectives beyond our own borders, while staying firmly rooted in the communities we serve.

The meeting was both engaging and insightful. Joris spoke openly about his work and experiences within the Austrian Parliament, offering a fascinating glimpse into how local and national politics operate in a different political system. Despite the differences in structures and processes, it was striking just how many of the challenges and priorities we share, from community engagement and public trust, to the everyday realities of representing residents and responding to their concerns.

It was especially enjoyable to attend this meeting with Cllr Sue Bell, whose dedication to our ward and thoughtful approach to local issues always brings depth and balance to any discussion. Sue’s ability to connect local experiences with wider policy conversations helped make the exchange particularly meaningful, ensuring that the discussion remained grounded in the realities faced by our residents.

Conversations like these reinforce the importance of collaboration and learning. Local government does not exist in isolation, and there is real value in listening to how others approach problem-solving, participation, and democratic accountability. While our political contexts may differ, the shared commitment to public service is something that clearly transcends borders.

I left the meeting feeling encouraged and inspired. It served as a timely reminder that democracy is strengthened when we remain open to dialogue, curious about different approaches, and willing to learn from one another. Meeting Joris, and doing so alongside such a dedicated colleague, was a genuinely rewarding experience.

I look forward to continuing these kinds of exchanges in the future and to building on the ideas and insights shared during this visit — always with the aim of better serving our community.
